Slowing the pickup in front of the house, Ryan parked and cut the engine. He moved without any hitch and his end of the day lower back tightness was gone. Maybe yoga wasn’t so bad. After a full night’s rest, his usual aches and pains had disappeared.

When he had stepped out of bed and stretched his arms overhead, he reached a little higher than yesterday morning. Had one class been the magic tonic to boost his flexibility? If only I’d let her get to the meditation part, I might have peace during my day.

With a fully booked resort, however, controlled chaos was his best hope. From sunrise to sunset, he’d been on the move. He was grateful he hadn’t wasted much time with his thoughts. He was promised nothing but anxiety if his mind strayed to Meg and where she might be. And who might be keeping her company.

Shaking his head, he hopped to the ground from his truck and strode to the front door. The sky finally darkened. A hint of woodsmoke curled in the air. He sniffed again. A vaguely fishy, muddy scent wafted past.

Deep, rumbling laughter floated around the corner of the house.

He turned from the door and jogged down the steps, rounding the side in several long strides.

Drenched and mud-splattered, Marcia and Ford Clayton trudged from the barn and across the lawn in socks.

Ryan winced. Wet socks were the worst thing on earth. He could—and had—assist in a live birth and stitched a gushing wound without flinching. Ask him to do anything that ended in soaking socks squeezing his soles, and he bowed out before his stomach churned. “Good evening. Can I help you two?”

“Good evening, Ryan,” Ford said. “We dropped off the boots we borrowed at the barn. Marcia has something to say.” He stepped back and motioned for his wife to walk forward.

Marcia grinned broadly and pushed her stringy, soaked hair behind her ears. “You were right. We didn’t find gold. My husband was right. We fell into the creek.”

“Ah, I never get tired of hearing her say that.” Ford chuckled. “Makes every bad idea worthwhile.”

“Hey.” She swatted her husband’s arm. “Don’t you have something to say?”

Ford grabbed her hand, raised her fingers to his mouth, and kissed her knuckles. “You were right. I had a lot of fun.” He faced Ryan and shrugged. “I always do. I’d never do anything outside my comfort zone if not for my wife. I wouldn’t have so many memorable tales.”

Ryan smiled and nodded, hiding his confusion. Why had she pushed? If two people hadn’t sanded off each other’s rough edges with twenty years’ together, how was this bliss?

“I learned the hard way,” Ford said. “I prefer having her push all my buttons to sitting around in silence.”

Marcia kissed her husband’s cheek.

Because—in spite of differing points of view—they like the end result.

Meg definitely pushed Ryan into uncomfortable encounters. The talent show was the most prominent in a childhood of awkward, on-the-spot moments. He could write a thousand-word essay for every day spent together.
